A soft, porous rock consisting of calcium carbonate that is formed by the evaporation of water, generally at the mouth of a hot spring or on a drying lakebed. Tufa was historically used for alpine planting troughs. As it became more and more difficult to obtain Hypertufa was invented to take it's place.
